1st grade

A flow of the first degree.
Do you have a certificate from primary school? Then you go to the A flow of the first degree.
The first stage is a transitional period between primary education and
the second and third stage of secondary education. We help you to
orientate yourself and by discovering your talents.
In our broad first degree, of which the broad common basic education is the same in all schools, young people are introduced through projects with aspects from the domains of Society and Welfare, Sport, Art and Creation and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics). How is this organized now?
Basic training (27 hours)
We mainly speak of clusters of attainment targets that we do detail in more detail via subjects. It is true that attainment targets can be offered in more than one cluster and therefore in several subjects. For example, you can find final objectives of ICT or Dutch, for example, in almost all subjects.
Cluster: LBV
| FIELD | HOURS |

| Philosophy subjects | 2 |
Cluster: People and society
| FIELD | HOURS |
|---|---|
| Historical awareness | 1 |
| Cultural and artistic awareness | 2 |
| Active citizen in the 21st century | 2 |
| Movement and health | 2 |
As a municipal secondary school, we are public education and therefore pluralistic. We offer non-denominational ethics and the officially recognized religions.
Historical awareness mainly encompasses history, but is enriched with other elements of knowledge and skills (as is the case for all subjects, by the way). Cultural and artistic awareness is a combination of plastic and musical education with expression. Movement and health is a combination of physical education with elements of health (posture, first aid, ...).
With " active citizen in the 21st century " we want to help you to take the step as a growing citizen in society. Membership of a society is what we call citizenship and that is what binds us all together. Active citizenship then means actively participating in our community, and this from the perspective of rights but also obligations.
To realize this, we teach you 21st century skills (21st Century Skills), such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, media literacy. These skills are a common thread running through all clusters and subjects.

STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics, and has been in our DNA for many years. Mathematics (Mathematics) and Science (Science) are taught everywhere, but with Engineering in combination with Technology (Technology) we are one step ahead. Here you get the opportunity to also use your hands to make objects or devices.
Spatial awareness includes the exact sciences of geography.
Cluster: languages
| FIELD | HOURS |
|---|---|
| Dutch | 4 |
| Reading Comprehension | 0 (+1) |
| French | 3 |
Languages have always been important and will remain so. In addition to Dutch , we have French and English as modern languages. Knowing and being able to use these languages is especially important in our region close to Brussels.

You may have heard of the Pisa results , which showed that today's youth score less than before for math and reading comprehension . For mathematics we offer an extra hour, and for Dutch we also focus on reading comprehension . You practice reading comprehension not only with current events, but also with texts from other subjects, so you become an expert in reading comprehension and you already learn for the other subjects: two birds with one stone.
ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is incorporated in the other STEM subjects. In this extra hour of ICT programming , your computational thinking is especially enhanced. Computational thinking allows you to develop the ability to solve problems by understanding ICT or using ICT. This does not always have to be STEM-related problems, but can also be in the domain of Sport and Society & Welfare, economy, etc.
